Abstract A comprehensive experiment consisting of four modules, determination of saturated hydrocarbon content and carbon number distribution in diesel oil, synthesis and purification of polyacrylic acid higher alcoholic ester (PTA), infrared characterization and molecular weight determination of PTA, and evaluation of PTA pour point depressant performance, was designed to serve as a platform for examination and achievement evaluation of chemical experiments. This kind of examination combines the check of process and result, and combines the written examination, operation and design. It can examine the students' basic experimental skills such as organic synthesis, instrumental analysis comprehensively and accurately. In addition, it can effectively train students' learning ability, problem-solving ability, practical ability and innovative ability, and promote the level of experimental teaching.
