Abstract For determination of trace volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in water, purge and trap was a commonly used pretreatment technique to concentrate and seperate the target organic compounds in order to reach the detection limit of subsequent analytical instruments. Purge and trap device was usually too expensive to be universally equiped in analytical chemistry and environmental monitoring teaching experiments. In this paper, a modified simple purge and trap device was introduced, and its working principle was displayed. The modified device replaced the conventional adsorbent trap with cold organic solvent trap and simplified the experiment process. The application of this device on the pretreatment of methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE) in water showed that it was simple to operate, displayed the working mechanism clearly, and obtained accurate data. It could effectively enhance students to understand the techniques of purge and trap.
