Abstract The discovery of germanium fills the blank of the periodic table, and consolidates the status of periodic law. The germanium crystal, because of excellent properties, has been widely used in semiconductors, infrared optics, fiber optics devices and communication industry, making it a strategic resource for national defense. Recently, the unique physicochemical properties and biological effects of germanium have been gradually recognized, making it a "star element" in the field of heath care. However, much more rigorous experimental studies are needed to provide solid evidences to reveal the mechanism of its biological effects.
