Abstract Based on the principle that a green fluorescence of InP nanoprobe was clearly observed in the presence of cadmium irons, we could judge whether there were cadmium ions in the tested samples by adding InP nanocrystals. Also, the quantitative analysis of cadmium ions was conducted using fluorescence spectrometer. The method to directly detect cadmium ions in hydrophobic as well as those in hydrophilic media has exhibited excellent characters on convenient operation, potential applications, high selectivity and sensitivity. The experiment teaching can make students better understand practical applications of this nanoprobe, which has been at the forefront of science and technology, stimulate their interest in scientific research, train their operating ability and cultivate their scientific spirit of thinking.
