Abstract A comprehensive chemistry experiment was designed to understand the process of biomass liquefaction and the analysis and separation of its products. Aimed to obtain high value-added chemicals such as acetophenone, 2,6-dimethoxyphenol, the experiment steps include the ethanol liquefaction of biomass (wheat straw), the collection of gas/liquid/solid products, the characterization of products components and structures, and the separation of liquid products (bio-oil) by extraction and column chromatography. Based on the current situation of social energy, this experiment combines students' theoretical knowledge with practical application, and stimulate their interests in new energy chemistry. The utilization of various means of separation, purification and product analysis in this experiment can improve students' basic experimental skills, practical operations capability and data handing ability. At the same time, students are encouraged to expand their knowledge and design innovative schemes.
