Abstract Responding to the needs of biomedical innovative talents for the development of science and society, a "multi-discipline research platform" including biomedical engineering, chemistry, physics, materials, electronics and medicine was stablished to train the graduate students of biomedical engineering. Relying on the Cultivating Fund Project for National Key Projects and Emerging Interdisciplinary Research of Sun Yat-sen University, a cross-disciplinary supervisor-group was formed for exploring a way to improve innovative ability of postgraduate students as well as the capability to solve problems based on multi-discipline. The modern education concept like "people oriented" and "comprehensive development" as well as the higher education thinking of "focusing on the development of student" was considered in the whole student education process including boarding the knowledge range, compacting the basic knowledge and the practical capability. Practice results show that the multi-disciplinary research platform plays an important role in expanding graduate students' innovative thinking, expanding professional knowledge, cultivating engineering practice ability and so on. This paper has also given suggestions for the construction of multi-disciplinary postgraduate training system.
