Abstract A new smartphone imaging digital image analysis method for determination of glucose in human serum was proposed. Serum glucose reacts with glucose oxidase/peroxidase to form a color complex, then the digital images from the solution above were captured by a smartphone and imported into the Image J software to read the values of three channels. The experimental data showed that the values of green and blue channels are linearly correlated with the certain concentration of serum glucose, both the values of green and blue channels can be used to establish standard curves for determination of glucose in human serum. Then the sensitivity of the two standard curves was compared. Finally, the standard curve of blue light with high sensitivity was used to detect the samples. The results were consistent with those of spectrophotometric method with the recovery of 96.0%~102.5%. The proposed method is easy, rapid, accurate and can be used in on-site analysis without professional instruments. In this method, the students' own smartphones as detector can greatly stimulate their interests in experiment and innovative spirit.
