Abstract This paper collected 180 survey study papers in Chinese Journal of Chemical Education and Education in Chemistry from 2011 to 2016, analyzed the status and trends in survey study, and investigated the qualities by using Qualities of Survey Study Instrument. The results showed that the number of survey studies trended to decrease; the most common research area involved in chemistry learning, teacher education and chemistry teaching; the participants were mainly high school students and in-service teachers; about half of the authors were from colleges and universities. In terms of the qualities of research, although the qualities increased year by year, the overall research qualities were not optimistic. The main problems were a lack of direct evidence on reliability and validity, the simplified data analysis, and the inadequate literature review.
