Abstract The curriculum construction, teaching practice and reform exploration on green chemistry as a general education public elective course for undergraduates of comprehensive universities were described in detail. The students' study interests was greatly inspired and the teaching effect was significantly improved through reforming the meticulousness of teaching emphases, the degree of difficulty of the curriculum, the diversification of teaching methods and the rationalization of evaluation mechanism. The total construction aim and implementation plans of green chemistry as a general education course for all majors were clarified, which would also probably provide some valuable teaching experience and reform approaches for the construction of other chemical general education courses.
