Abstract The discovery process, structure and application of allotropes, oxygen and ozone, have been well summarized in this paper, especially the application of oxygen in catalytic oxidation of alcohols and ozone in catalytic oxidation of organic pollutants in water is briefly introduced. Both oxygen and ozone have in common the production of aerobic active species to speed up the reaction. At the same time, due to the different structures of the allotropes, the role of catalysts in their respective catalytic oxidation processes is different.
