Abstract Aiming at academic discredit of postgraduates, the study investigated 10 chemistry research groups in 6 first-class universities and elucidated specific phenomena and reasons of academic discredit, as well as effective measures to establish academic credit by using open interviews, participatory observation and field notes of qualitative approach. The reasons for the academic discredit are found to include unhealthy social influence, the pressure and stimulus of the university regulations, limited management of supervisors and the postgraduates themselves. However, the supervisors have taken repeating validation, using original data as supporting information and co-completing experiment to solve academic discredit. The study shows that despite the chance of academic discredit, the adoption of certain measures can prevent academic discredit and establish credit.
