Abstract Preparation of metal chromium complex and determination of its splitting energy is a comprehensive experiment in university chemistry experiment course. It is found that there are too many problems such as excessive amounts of medicines, excessive chromium waste, long experimental time and insufficient optimization of experimental conditions etc. To solve these problems, the experiment was improved in three points. Firstly, microscale-experiments were used instead of conventional experiments; secondly, ultraviolet spectrophotometry was used for determination instead of spectrophotometry. Lastly, optimization of experimental conditions was found. There were many advantages of the improved experiment in inquiry of teaching design, environmental protection, low-cost, short time and high accuracy. Through this experiment, students' awareness of energy saving and emission reduction would be enhanced, while students' interest in scientific research would be stimulated, and students' practical ability and scientific spirit of thinking would be cultivated.
