Abstract Gilbert Newton Lewis was one of the great chemists of the 20th century. At the University of California, Berkeley, Lewis gradually built one of the most powerful and creative chemistry departments in the world by recruiting excellent teachers, advocating for academic freedom and cooperation and developing an educational training module, where he trained a number of doctoral students who went on to make other major contributions to the field of chemistry. This paper introduces the educational reforms during Lewis's tenure as the dean of the College of Chemistry at the University of California, Berkeley.
