Abstract A new method for the calculation of liquid junction potentials has been proposed according to the idea that the net charge across the liquid junction is zero when the liquid junction potential is in steady state. Calculations of three kinds of liquid junction potentials, especially for the derivation of the Lewis-Sargent formula and the Henderson equation, are clear and understandable, and problems existing in the previous methods for the calculation of liquid junction potentials are avoided. The method proposed herein can provide a reference for teaching related to liquid junction potentials.
