Abstract It can be seen from the history of VSEPR model that the hypothesis of “The Cubical Atom” proposed by Lewis in 1916 laid the foundation for the formation of VSEPR model. In 1940, Sidgwick and Powell's hypothesis further promoted the formation of the VSEPR model. In 1957, Gillespie and Nyholm expanded the hypothesis of Sidgwick and Powell, and formally put forward the concept of Valence Shell Electron Pair Repulsion theory in 1963. To 1988, Gillespie proposed the ligand close packing model (LCP model) to make up for the shortcomings of the VSEPR model. The theory of Valence Shell Electron Pair Repulsion is a kind theory for qualitative study of molecular structure, which opens up the process of qualitative study of molecular structure by chemists.
