Abstract The surface tension data fitting methods of 13 substances such as acetic acid, propionic acid, n-butyric acid, 2-methyl butyric acid, 3-methyl butyric acid, valeric acid, hexanoic acid, ethanol, propyl alcohol, isopropyl alcohol, 1-butanol, 2-methyl-1-propanol, 1,2-propanediol at 25 ℃ were compared. The advantages and disadvantages of graphic method, polynomial approximation, first-order exponential function, power function and Shishkovsky formula were analyzed. It is pointed out that Shishkovsky formula is an ideal fitting method for surface tension data for its accurate fitting results with less affected by the sample size of data.
