Abstract Quantitative reasoning is defined as the ability to apply basic mathematical knowledge to solve complex problems in an interdisciplinary context. Quantitative reasoning is a high-order thinking ability that incorporates mathematics and professional subject knowledge and skills. The developments of quantitative reasoning skills are important to the achievement of the chemistry literacy for all students. Taking discovery of hydrogen as an example, this paper expounds the importance of quantitative reasoning in the history of science.
