Abstract Since 2003 until now, Beijing Normal University chemistry education team carried out the exploration of modeling-based teaching around “Atomic Structure and Elements Properties” theme across the middle school, compulsory module and selective module for high school. A large number of sub-topics are covered such as atomic particles and it’s spatial distribution, the extranuclear electron motion state, the configuration rule of extranuclear electron, the different element properties and so on. These teaching explorations sort out and restore the problem-solving process of scientists, and reproduce or simulate the experiments conducted by scientists. Based on the reasoning process of scientists constructing atomic structure model through experimental evidence, we design and guide students to carry out modeling activities, so that students can understand, evaluate or participate in the process of modeling, and promote the formation and development of students’ modeling ability and view of the nature of science.
