Abstract Practical and innovative literacy is an important part of middle school students’ core-literacy. In this study, polymer-synthetic was taken as an example, land-competition of cotton and grain was taken as the background, and project-based learning was taken as the learning form. The results showed that students’ practical and innovative literacy was significant imoproved. At the same time, hierarchical teaching was introduced to this instruction design, which made an effective attempt to teach students according to their aptitude.
