Abstract The photocatalyst of BiOCl with high catalytic activity was synthesized by one-pot hydrothermal procedure with bismuth nitrate and potassium chloride. Different characterizations were carried out to identify the physiochemical properties of BiOCl, such as X-ray diffractions (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM) and UV-Vis spectra. The catalytic activity was tested by photocatalysis with 300W Xenon lamp as light source. The experiment involves one-pot hydrothermal synthesis procedure, characterizations and photocatalysis degradation processes of Rhodamine B, which combined the theoretical content together. The college students could better learn the synthesis principle of nanoscale materials and the catalytic degradation process as well as the structure characterization. Through this experiment, the study ability of students could be trained and familiar with the operation of instruments. Moreover, this experiment can motivate the interests of students in scientific research and improve their innovative abilities.
