Abstract Rounding off for numerical values is an important content in the analytical chemistry teaching. The mainstream analytical chemistry textbooks adopt the rules of round half to even at present. The relationship between the mantissa and rounding condition has been analyzed in detail. The results show that not the “mantissa” but “the first digit of the mantissa” would conform to the rule. Comparative analysis shows that the rounding rules with numbers 4, 5, and 6 as comparison values are the same as the GBT8170—2008 national standard with 5. However the logic and presentation of the latter are better. Therefore, it is suggested that the rounding rules of the GBT8170—2008 national standard should be adopted in analytical chemistry textbooks.
