Abstract From 1828 to 1931, after a hundred years of exploration by chemists, the modern concept of ruthenium was gradually formed. It can be divided into three stages: the separation of impure ruthenium elements from ruthenium-platinum ore residue, the successful preparation of ruthenium elements and the discovery of ruthenium isotopes. In the process of the formation and development of the concept of ruthenium, creative and intuitive thinking played an important role, as well as the rigorous and realistic scientific attitude and the scientific spirit of critical and questioning.
