Abstract From the perspective of green chemistry, we explore the use of a non-toxic organic “n-octadecanol/lauric acid” eutectic system with low melting point near room temperature to improve the experiment of “binary phase diagram construction of simple eutectic system”. By measuring a series of cooling curves of the binary system with various compositions, the phase change temperatures were obtained to plot the liquidus line in the phase diagram. Furthermore, those phase change temperatures were verified by means of differential scanning calorimetry, indicating the above two methods are in good agreement with each other and the feasibility of the proposed binary organic eutectic system. In addition, due to its considerable latent heat of the phase change of higher aliphatic alcohol/acid system, the binary system shows great promise as room-temperature phase change energy storage material. Thus, the proposed experiment based on the organic eutectic system, while making green chemical improvement to the experiment, can also help students understand the prospect technology of phase change material and the latent heat thermal energy storage.
