Abstract The construction and implementation of first-class courses promote the reform of course evaluation methods in Chinese universities. Formative assessment pays close attention to the student's learning process, and makes for the learning of students and the teaching of teachers. This paper focused on the implementation methods of formative evaluation of chemistry in foreign universities. And applications of formative evaluation were sorted out in three types of courses, including offline courses, online courses, and online and offline mixed courses. The analysis and conclusion of formative evaluation were issued on the three aspects of diagnosis method, feedback method and adjustment method, to provide reference for the effective implementation of formative evaluation of chemistry in domestic universities.
