Abstract Taking Dunhuang frescoes as the research object, this paper analyzed the material basis of the color system of ancient mural paintings, pigment coloring mechanism, color change factors, as well as preservation and restoration techniques from the chemical point of view, with a view to increasing the depth of teachers’ and students’ knowledge of the color of Dunhuang frescoes, inheriting and carrying forward the excellent culture of the Chinese nation, and enhancing the awareness of cultural relics protection and cultural self-confidence.
