Abstract Extensive attention has been paid to the novel pyrene-based chromophores with wide applications in the fields of organic optoelectronic and functional materials. As a promising photoactive polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon, pyrene features the merits of easy functionalization modification, high luminescence efficiency, and versatile photophysical properties, etc. This article focuses on the effects induced by some different substituents on the conjugated pyrene moieties, elucidates the relationship between molecular functional structures and their photophysical properties. It will help for the design and preparation of high-performance organic chromophores containing pyrenyl units.
