Abstract An innovative comprehensive chemistry experiment was designed by combining hand-held technology:the synthesis of dansyl-morpholine and determination of solvent polarity.Firstly,by improving the reported synthesis method,an experiment about synthesis of dansyl-morpholine was designed.In this experiment,dansyl-morpholine was synthesized from dansyl chloride and morpholine under acid scavenger,solvent free conditions through a sulfonylation reaction.Subsequently,utilizing the solvatochromic property of the dansyl-morpholine,an experiment was also designed to determine the polarity of the solvent by means of the snap shot,color recognition and digitalization by smart phone.This experiment integrated the theoretical knowledge and experimental operation including organic synthesis,molecular design of solvatochromic dyes,concept of solvent polarity and its determination.This experiment is helpful for students to understand the logical relationships between the structure,function and properties of organic compounds,and further cultivates their scientific inquiry abilities and creative spirit.It can provide a simple and feasible comprehensive chemical experiment teaching case for undergraduate school teachers.
