Abstract Aggregation-induced emission(AIE)is a special photophysical phenomenon that refers to the phenomenon that certain molecules do not emit light or emit light very weakly in a low concentration state, and when the molecules are in an aggregated state or solid state, the light emission is significantly enhanced. This phenomenon has attracted a lot of attention from researchers since it was reported in 2001,because it has good applications in the fields of bioimaging, fluorescence sensing, liquid crystal display and OLED lighting. In this paper, the mechanism of aggregation-induced emission is introduced, explaining the theory of restricted intramolecular motions that is currently endorsed.Aggregation-induced emission(AIE)systems are described, and their applications in sensing, bioimaging and diagnostics, and optoelectronic devices are introduced. The advantages and characteristics of AIE systems and their possible applications are summarized, and the direction of the practical application of AIE materials is envisaged.
