Abstract Generative Artificial Intelligence has demonstrated great potential in the field of education. This study aims to systematize empirical research on the application of generative AI in chemistry education, specifically in the Journal of Chemical Education. The focus is on identifying specific application scenarios and assessing the effects of generative AI to reveal its actual performance and potential value in chemistry teaching. The results show that the existing research focuses on three main aspects:the evaluation of generative AI tools, the application of assisting students in accomplishing tasks in chemistry courses, and the role in promoting the development of students' critical thinking skills.Specifically, the quality of generative AI in answering chemistry questions is affected by a variety of factors such as the type and difficulty of the question and the prompts entered by the user.Leveraging its advanced text generation capabilities, generative AI has been widely used to support students in writing lab reports and chemistry writing, but there are still limitations in deep chemical analysis and reasoning. Moreover, studies have explored strategies for utilizing generative AI to develop students' critical thinking, such as creating interactive learning environments, promoting collaborative learning, and providing diverse learning resources.Despite these advancements, research on specific teaching strategies for integrating generative AI in chemistry education is still weak.Future research should prioritize a comprehensive assessment of generative AI's capabilities in solving complex chemical problems and further investigate effective interaction patterns and strategies between students and generative AI systems.
