Abstract Recently, nitric oxide and carbon monoxide were found to play important roles in many physiological processes. The interaction of NO and CO with the hemoglobin is thought to be the key factor for the unique bio-functions of these small molecules. In this paper, the coordination chemistry of heme and hematosin with NO, CO, O2 as well as the coordination-induced trans-effect of heme are reviewed. The correlation of physiological functions and the coordination chemistry properties are also introduced.
