Abstract This article elaborated the teaching reform with example of heavy oil modification experiment form four aspects including the establishment of research direction, the study of research contents, the master of experimental methods and the discussion of the rules. Teaching practices showed that the reform of experiment teaching oriented by project research could promote students to participate in project research and think scientifically during the experiment, cultivate students' comprehensive practical ability and strengthen the training of scientific research ability.
