Abstract Through investigation, this paper showed that students' answers to optional items of college entrance examination of chemistry was related to four factors: chemistry elective courses that school opened, difficulty of test items, time needed to answer questions and students' learning ability. It was suggested that school should open enough elective courses and allow students to show their own selectivity, so as to meet the idea of multi-module with optional courses of new curriculum and the core concept of "all for each student's development".
