Abstract This study investigated the basic situation and training needs of 221 high school chemistry teachers who had attended the provincial backbone teachers training project in Sichuan Province from 2012 to 2015 based on questionnaire survey and interviews, and put forward the thinking and suggestions on the scientific planning of the backbone teachers' training work, such as investigating deeply and diagnosing scientifically the backbone teachers' training needs, making training contents based on backbone teachers' demands, formulating self-selection courses for teachers, optimizing the structure of curriculum, focusing on solving practical problems; establishing an expert team to improve the teaching effect, carrying out the "one·three" mode of training, and establishing proper operation mechanism of regional training and school-based study.
