Abstract This paper analyzed the functions of "magnesium ribbon burning" experiment in the different junior high school chemistry textbooks to core knowledge, discussed the appropriateness in the learning process of "law of conservation of mass". Based on the complexity of the reaction principle, the diversity of the experimental results, and the harm of the experimental process and so on, this paper put forward some suggestions on the operation of "magnesium ribbon burning".
