Abstract The preparation of p-nitrobenzoic acid is a typical representative of oxidation reaction in organic chemistry lab teaching. Different synthesis conditions were examined to increase the yield of p-nitrobenzoic acid and simplify the post-processing steps. The effects of reaction time, reaction temperature and phase transfer catalyst on the yield of p-nitrobenzoic acid were investigated. Results showed that the yield of p-nitrobenzoic acid increased significantly following modification of reaction conditions, including type of oxidant, adding phase transfer catalyst and changing the feeding method. The yield of p-nitrobenzoic acid, under optimized conditions, was increased by 16.8% when compared with classical experimental protocol used in textbook.
