Abstract Based on the "Riverside's Dilemma" PBL case of the college chemistry course in a American university, this paper analyses the characters of PBL teaching in the aspects of objectives, problem design and evaluation. It is suggested that the instructional design of chemistry PBL teaching in China should first aim at cultivating comprehensive abilities, then design the problem based on learning progressions, situation and enlightenment, at last ensure the diverse evaluation. At the same time, in the actual implementation of PBL teaching, it is necessary to consider the class schedules, teachers' and students' literacy, evaluation methods and supporting teaching facilities and so on.
