Abstract A comprehensive experiment of organic chemistry has been introduced in this paper. Many techniques will be demonstrated though a project that will consume about twelve weeks of the course. This complete project is the synthesis of vanillin starting from whole cloves, which have no vanillin. During this project, the students extract eugenol from whole cloves and then synthesize vanillin from it. Along the way, the purification of the intermediates will require many different techniques, including distillation, synthesis, and crystallization. In order to determine the purity of the compounds after purification, the IR and UV-Vis spectrometers, and the HPLC chromatography instrument will be used.
