Abstract The Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling of 4-BrPhCOCH3 and PhB(OH)2 with β-cyclodextrin ligand in water is a green alternative to conventional methods using poisonous phosphine ligands and organic solvents. The effects of the ratio of Na2PdCl4/β-CD, the amount of Na2PdCl4 or PhB(OH)2, reaction temperature and time on the yield were investigated by the single factor experiment. By guiding students to recognize the β-CD structure and discuss the mechanism of this reaction, our teaching practice not only make them realize the importance of green chemistry, but also stimulates their interests in scientific research. Moreover, such a reaction is an environmentally-benign and mild experiment with short reaction time, high yield and good repeatability, thus applicable completely to the undergraduate curriculum.
