Abstract The development process and significance to scientific and innovative activities of “thought experiment” are reviewed. The teaching strategy which combines the “thought experiment” with chemical experiment teaching is raised. Such strategy will help improve the current chemical experiment teaching process. The method that leads the students to make backward logical reasoning and analysis on the design of experiments procedure can promote the student’s innovative thinking and the ability to practice the innovation.
