Abstract Numerous allotropes of silicon are comprehensively summarized in this paper, which can be divided into different phases of silicon nanocrystal, nanostructured silicons, silicon cluster and silene. The existence, composition, structure, preparation and properties of various allotropes are briefly described. The role of computational chemistry in the prediction of allotropes and the role of the development of modern science and technology in the preparation of allotropes and their applications in materials are also emphasized.
