Abstract The nomenclature of organic compounds issued by Chinese Chemical Society in 2017 has brought new challenges to the teaching of organic chemistry. After introducing the basic knowledge point related to chain hydrocarbons,how to correctly name the chain hydrocarbons is demonstrated via the specific examples. The nomenclature of complex substituents was clarified. Whether the English prefixes of substituents participate in alphabetic sorting was illustrated. We expected that this discussion could provide direct useful reference for the teaching of naming chain hydrocarbons.
