Abstract Grasping English nomenclature of organic compounds has become more and more important since Nomenclature of Organic Compounds (2017) based on English IUPAC nomenclature was issued. This paper introduces a new teaching method on English and Chinese nomenclatures of organic compounds. Compounds with one class of characteristic groups are classified as hydrocarbons and non-hydrocarbons, numbering characteristic of functional groups, acyclic and cyclic compounds, while compounds with different characteristic groups are paid much attention to the priorities of the functional groups as main functional groups and whether the carbonyl carbon atoms of the functional groups (aldehyde, carboxylic acid and its derivatives) locate in the main linear and cyclic stems. The method is convenient for both teaching and learning, and popular and acceptable in our teaching practices.
