Abstract In order to investigate the real effect of chemical laboratory education, a questionaire survey was conducted to explore the laboratory anxiety, safety attitude, safety intention and safety knowledge of undergraduates in Grade 2 in the College of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Tianjin University of Technology. The results showed that the difference of laboratory anxiety occurred in gender, and females were more anxious than males. Undergraduates who have participated in safety training had more correct attitude towards safety than those who have not. The regression analysis demonstrated that the safety intention was positively correlated with laboratory anxiety, safety attitude and knowledge. Based on the results above, some improvement suggestion were proposed. The undergraduates' psychological security should be focused on and laboratory anxiety should be overcome by emotional counseling. The safety education patterns should be optimized to give full play of students' subjective initiative in the future. Finally, the safety education is also a process of morality education. Through safety education, undergraduates will be cultivated to revere life, responsibility and rules and become qualified practitioners.
