Abstract ACE organic is an online homework of organic chemistry. ACE prompts students to construct a structural response to a posed question with a graphical structure-drawing interface. ACE offers feedback that explains why a response is correct or incorrect, guiding students to the correct answer. ACE is the only program that allows students to drawcomplicatedmechanisms ormultistepsyntheses. There are multiple correct answers to a question such as this one, but ACE is intelligent enough to accept many different correct answers and still exclude the incorrect ones. Automatic grading of ACE relieves instructors of grading students’ homework themselves, but they can still use students’ grades on homework towards their class grades. In particular, the ACE forum allows students to ask questions that the instructor or other students can answer. The ACE has been applied to the organic chemistry course in College of Chemistry, Jilin University. It was proved that using of ACE increased students’ interests in organic chemistry and developed students’ strict scientific attitude.
