Abstract According to the currently accepted mechanisms of synthesis and decomposition of ammonia, the rate-determining step of the forward and reverse reaction is discussed. Then, the rate equations of synthesis and decomposition of ammonia is formulated based on which the kinetic equilibrium constants are postulated. The comparison between the kinetic and thermodynamic expressions of equilibrium constant is made. It is helpful for the students to correctly understand the relationship between thermodynamic equilibrium constant and reaction rate of ammonia synthesis.
