Abstract The relationship between chemistry learning motivation, laboratory safety awareness and attitude among first-year undergraduates in university was investigated with questionnaire survey. The results showed that motivation of learning chemistry, laboratory safety awareness and safety attitude were significant different in schools. The laboratory safety awareness and safety attitude of students in School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering wassignificant moderate positivecorrelation with the motivation of learning chemistry, but those in other schools were weak correlation. Therefore, teachers should improve the relevance of safety education with the specialty, and combine the curriculum content with professional characteristics and application as much as possible.
