Abstract Using the concept map software CmapTools 5.05 as the tool, this paper used the indexes of content width, reading difficulty and knowledge partition to quantitative process 5 different versions of junior high school chemistry textbooks, and concluded that textbook published by Shanghai Education Press was biggest and that published by People's Education Press was smallest on the content width; textbook published by Science Press and Guangdong Education Publishing House was biggest and that published by Beijing Education Press and Popular Science Press was smallest on the reading difficulty; on the knowledge partition, textbook published by People's Education Press was biggest, textbook published by Beijing Education Press and Popular Science Press was bigger, and others were smallest. Comparing their concept maps, textbooks published by Shandong Education Press and Shanghai Education Press had a medium degree of similarity to that published by People's Education Press. These conclusions had a good reference value on evaluation and selection of textbooks.
