Abstract Based on the focus on the concept of green sustainable development, the project of “carbon neutrality” and “carbon peak”, and the education and teaching reform, herein, a comprehensive experiment that the controlled preparation of biomass charcoal and its Zn-air battery was designed to highlight the important role of scientific research in improving the quality of undergraduate teaching. In this experiment, biomass charcoal with adjustable pore structure and oxygen-containing functional group was prepared from agricultural waste biomass-wheat straw by carbonization and activation methods, and then employed as electrocatalyst for oxygen reduction reaction and zinc-air battery. Conversion of the research hotspot into the chemical comprehensive experiment is novel and also suitable for undergraduate teaching, which further promotes the vertical integration of multi-subject contents and realizes the cross-integration between professional knowledge and scientific research hotspot fields, and finally makes up for the shortcomings of traditional chemical experimental discipline barriers. Additionally, the combination of inquiry learning and comprehensive experiment operation is favor for improving students’ comprehensive experiment skills and practical innovation ability.
