Abstract “Appreciation of Classic Papers in Chemistry” is a freshman seminar course aimed at cultivating scientific research interests and abilities by improving students' understanding of the chemical research and discovery process. This course introduces flipped classroom, adopts online and offline hybrid teaching mode, uses classic papers in chemistry on experiments and theory as raw materials to construct teaching content, and explores the thinking process of chemists in discovering the mysteries of knowledge. The knowledge goals of this course: understand the generation and iteration mechanism of chemical knowledge, and become familiar with the methods of scientific research in chemistry; enable students to master the classification and writing structure of chemical journal papers, and some basic knowledge related to the content learned in chemistry textbooks (such as Lewis electron dot structure, allotropes of carbon, etc.). The ability and literacy goals of this course: stimulate students' interests in scientific research, enhance students' literature retrieval and reading abilities and critical thinking, and cultivate students' abilities to solve problems independently. The construction of this course is explored from the aspects of course objectives, teaching content design, teaching mode, and assessment of students' performances, among others.
