Abstract Gibbs energy is one of the fundamental concepts in physical chemistry. By tracing back to the high school curriculum standards and multiple editions of high school textbooks, this paper reviewed how the concept of Gibbs energy was introduced and developed in high school textbooks. The content of the six editions of textbooks concerning Gibbs energy was also analyzed and compared. Taking the differences among those textbooks into consideration, this paper analyzed several misconceptions and put forward three pedagogical suggestions, including in-depth interpretation of the changes in the curriculum standards, enhanced understanding of the intention of the textbook revision and exploration of various contextual materials.
